FTD Merlin Olsen? March 13, 2010
Merlin Olsen came to FTD in 1983 after his induction into
the Professional Football Hall of Fame. His credentials as
a defensive tackle with the Los Angeles Rams had earned him
entry into the National Football League's shrine of
excellence. But he also won national recognition for his
role as Jonathan Garvey on TV's Little House on the Prairie
and he later starred as Father Murphy in the television
series of the same name. Between acting stints, Merlin had
become a top football analyst for NBC.
Through the
1980s, Merlin appeared regularly in FTD television commercials
and helped FTD launch one of its most successful product
promotions ever. The Pick-Me-Up Bouquet, with its ceramic
rainbow coffee mug and matching, reusable tote bag, was an
instant hit with florists and the public. Through the 1990s and
2000s, Merlin continued to be an important member of the FTD
family appearing at the Rose Parade and FTD Conventions.
"FTD has suffered a great loss with the passing of Merlin Olsen.
He was a wonderful friend and spokesperson for us for many years
and will always be a member of the FTD family. Our heartfelt
condolences go out to his wife Susan and his entire family,"
said Rob Apatoff, President, FTD.
Memorial services for Merlin Olsen will be held privately.
